VISITING GROUND ZERO
by Garry Gestoveo
I joined a group of 21 Tokyo-based fellow Filipinos that visited one of the hardest hit areas in northeast Japan. We left Tokyo at 11 PM of July 29 and arrived in Ofunato around 8 AM the following morning. After a short orientation, and having been briefed of what we neede to know about the area, we prepared for the mass. After the mass we had some interaction with the group of Filipinos who worship at Ofunato church.

PRAY AND SUPPORT FOR JAPAN!
In the afternoon (2:46) of March 11, 2011 the north-easthern part of Japan was hit by a massive earth-quake (9M) and tsunami. Thousands people died and are still missing. Together with other the support from other countries, so many good people, Japanese and non-Japanese are working hand-in-hand to deal with the aftermath.
Tokyo, though it is quite far from the most hit areas, did experience the strong shakes. It is good to hear that all CICM confreres who are working in Tokyo are in good health. Our buildings (Oriens and Matsubara Church) did not have any damage.
The closest dioceses which were hit by the calamities are Diocese of Saitama and of Sendai. We learned that not so many church were damaged by the tsunami since most of the churches are in the mountains or upper part of the cities. One foreign missionary passed away because of the shock. For more information, you may see from the website of Saitama-Sendai Dioceses.
Let us continue to pray for our Japanese brothers and sisters.
